Mission
The SETI Institute’s mission is to lead humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the Universe and share that knowledge with the world.
About the SETI Institute
Founded in 1984, the SETI Institute is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary research and education organization whose mission is to lead humanity's quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the Universe and share that knowledge with the world. Our research encompasses the physical and biological sciences and leverages data analytics, machine learning, and advanced signal detection technologies. The SETI Institute is a distinguished research partner for industry, academia, and government agencies, including NASA and the National Science Foundation.
Carl Sagan Center for Research
Is there life nearby or among the stars? Whether looking for signs of life on the surface of Mars, under the ice of Jupiter’s moon Europa, or sweeping the sky for alien transmissions, SETI Institute scientists investigate the prospects for biology in our solar system and beyond.
The Carl Sagan Center for Research is home to more than 100 scientists and growing. These researchers have expertise in nearly all branches of science relevant to the development of life, where it might exist and how we can find it.
Core Research Areas:
- Astrobiology
- Astronomy & Astrophysics
- Data Science
- Heliophysics
- Exoplanets
- Planetary Exploration
- SETI

Center for Education
Are we alone in the Universe? Is there life beyond Earth? How can we search for evidence of life in our solar system and beyond? These questions motivate people to learn about our natural world and are at the core of our Center for Education. Our education programs promote STEM education through NASA and NSF-funded programs aimed at teaching and inspiring children, young adults and educators with an emphasis on space sciences and astrobiology.

Center for Outreach
Sharing our research and enthusiasm for scientific discovery with the public has been an important mission of the SETI Institute since its founding. Our outreach activities include talks, publications, media appearances, social media, public talks, and podcasts. We even have our own weekly science radio show, Big Picture Science.
